AstraZeneca’s focus is on new drug applications that may see a clear improvement in the treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), including patients with type 2 diabetes.
A trial in three European countries – Spain, Italy and the UK – showed that a new drug called Sildenafil, which is also sold under the brand name Viagra, will be effective in reducing the risk of heart attack in patients with heart failure. The drug’s main use in patients with heart failure is as a treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes.
But a study published yesterday in the British Medical Journal found that patients with type 2 diabetes who were on a diet high in saturated fats had a 10% lower risk of developing heart failure. This risk was increased in patients who were not on high fats, but who had had a diet high in trans fats, a study found. The study found that patients who ate high-fat diets were less likely to develop heart failure.
The results, published in theBritish Medical Journal, showed that the new drug, marketed under the name, is superior to a placebo in reducing the risk of developing heart failure in patients with CVD. It also shows that the drug can be used as a treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes and is effective in reducing the risk of developing heart failure. The study was led by Dr Andrew Goldstein of the University of York.
Glenco’s research showed that patients with type 2 diabetes who had been treated with the drug had an increased risk of developing heart failure, although the absolute risk of heart failure in the trial was less than 1%.

This finding is consistent with our results in patients with type 1 diabetes, which are often associated with cardiovascular disease.”
The study is published in theJournal of Clinical and Economic Molecular Science, which was conducted at the University of East Anglia.
A second study, published in the, showed that a novel drug,, which also has similar efficacy in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, was effective in reducing the risk of developing heart failure in patients with CVD. But the results were inconsistent, with patients receiving a placebo, and those receiving a higher dose of the drug. The study was led by Dr Andrew Goldstein of the University of York’s Langt SECTION.
Professor Goldstein said: “This finding is very important and we hope it will encourage more research into new drug applications that may have the benefit of reducing the risk of developing heart failure in patients with diabetes, although this is still an area where there is little evidence to support a beneficial effect of this novel drug on the heart.”
The study was also led by Professor Andrew Goldstein of the University of York’s Langt SECTION, who said: “We are not sure if these new drugs will prove effective in reducing the risk of developing heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes. But these studies are still in its early stages and the results of these studies are promising.”
Dr Goldstein added: “This is the first time that a drug like Viagra has been shown to reduce the risk of developing heart failure. This is the first time that a drug like Sildenafil has been shown to be superior to a placebo in reducing the risk of developing heart failure. New drugs for the treatment of diabetesThis is one of the first trials to test whether a drug, Sildenafil, is an effective treatment for CVD. However, the results of the study were inconsistent.
Dr Andrew Goldstein and colleagues, who led the research, said: “These results may be a direct result of a difference in the dosage of sildenafil compared with a placebo, although the results are not conclusive.”
